I'm a Guinness girl, through and through. I love the dark color, the creamy texture, and the beautiful transformation of colors as a freshly poured draught settles into the glass. Trouble is, not every bar in Hawaii has Guinness on tap, and I surely don't have one at home.
The next best alternative is a Draught from a can. True Guinness snobs will tell you that it's nothing even close to a fresh draught, and they're correct. But those masters at Guinness have done a darn fine job of managing to accomplish something pretty darn close when poured from a can. It's really all in the pour – I've had good, and I've had bad.
The thing about Guinness is it's a lot like fishing – when it's good, it's really good. And when it's bad, it's still pretty good.
If I had to complain about Guinness Draught, I would say that the price around the Big Island of Hawaii can be a little steep, and all over the map. I've seen some bars charging $4.50 a can, and others charging a ridiculous sum of $6.00. That's the price of living in paradise, I suppose. I may end up broke, but at least I'll have good beer.
