Pros: healthy, source of potassium, source of vitamin c, very low sugar content
Cons: expensive

I have been on a bit of a health trip recently and since coconut water is supposed to be good for your body. It has naturally occurring electrolytes, which you can also find in sports drinks like Powerade. Coconut water is also rich in potassium and according to Vita Coco it contains more potassium than a banana, which helps to keep your body hydrated, especially after a though work out.

I still drink water, but I try to have a glass of coconut water a day just as an additional health boost I guess. I also quite like to use coconut water for my fresh and healthy smoothies. I used to add milk to it, but I am trying to cut down on milk and instead I am looking for substitutes like almond or soya milk and coconut water. The benefit of Vita CoCo coconut water is that it’s not from concentrate and unlike the almond and soya milk it’s natural. In case you don’t know a lot of milk substitutes contain binding agents to stop “milk” from separating.

The entire process of harvesting the coconuts to processing it and packing it doesn’t exceed 72 hours, so it’s as close to fresh as it’ll get for a supermarket coconut water. The other benefit of drinking coconut water is that it doesn’t have a lot of fruit sugar. Most fruit juices are packed with fruit sugar and we end up consuming more sugar than we are aware of, whereas coconut water contains less than 1% fruit sugar. One 250ml glass of it will also cover your recommended daily amount of sugar.

I like to drink the coconut water by itself after an intense workout or add it to my fruit or vegetable smoothies. As far as the taste goes, it is quite subtle, although I have to admit that since this is a natural product the taste hasn’t always been consistent. At least that’s how I feel, it might be just all in my head though.  I’m not super crazy about the taste, but it is refreshing to drink a cool glass of coconut water the gym. It says on the carton that this product is suitable for vegetarians, which confuses me a little, because I would have assumed that it would also be suitable for vegans since it doesn’t contain any animal products. I will have to look into it.

All in all, I think it’s a good product, although it’s quite expensive. A 1 litre carton costs around £3.50, but sometimes there are on sale for £2 and that’s when I usually stock up on it. I know it’s pricy, but I think it’s definitely worth a try. I haven’t had the chance to compare it to any other brands of coconut water, because there isn’t really much of a selection, but I might try out if I find a different brand just so that I’m able to compare the taste. So far the Vita Coco gets a thumbs up from me and I can recommend it to anyone!
