Whenever I feel a cold coming on, I always reach for some form of night time cold medicine in an effort to kick the cold bug out before it gets bad. I don't have a particular brand that I stick with and because of such, I choose the least expensive. This time around, it happened to be the CVS brand, which is said to be comparable to NyQuil.
It's similar in some ways, but you can tell that it isn't as effective as the original. This cold medicine makes me incredible drowsy, which I like. I am able to sleep through the night comfortably and without having many coughing fits. The thing that I don't like is that it leaves me feeling groggy when I wake up. It's not so much as groggy, but it feels like it enhanced my cold symptoms. I took two gel caps as suggested on the box and the next morning, I felt worse than the previous day. My head was achy, my nose was constantly running, and I felt that I was coughing more.
Being a glutton for punishment, I decided to try it again, but the next night I only took one gel cap. This seemed to work better. I didn't feel groggy when I woke up and I was still able to sleep through the night. I still had my cold symptoms, but because I didn't feel like utter crap, it was more bearable.
This is good medication to help you sleep through your cold, but it isn't good for helping to cure the cold.
