When it comes to fishing rods, the prices can sometimes outrange my budget. I also prefer to spend the money on my reel and actual tackle. Therefore, when I needed a new fishing rod towards the end of fishing season, I decided to play it cheap. I bought the Shakespeare Durango Spinning rod online for under $15, fully expecting it to break before I used it. I’m glad I was wrong.
Three years later, I am still using the same rod. This Durango rod is one of the cheapest available from Shakespeare, and one of the lesser ones when it comes to quality. However, it’s also one of the most durable fishing rods I have ever used. I have taken this rod in waters no normal angler would ever take a cheap rod and it has held up perfectly.
It’s made from a much cheaper material than other fishing rods and mine has the gouges and nicks to prove it. Having said that, it also has a nice twist lock design to unlock the rod. Right now, I have a much heavier reel on it, and the Durango handles the weight perfectly. I would not use this rod in saltwater, or for larger fish, but it has caught salmon with no troubles at all. Definitely much more valuable than it is priced for.
