Ever wonder what it would have been like to be a slave? Wonder about the struggles they went through for freedom? Well wonder no more. This movie, 12 Years a Slave, is the true story of Solomon Northrup, a free black man from New York who was abducted and sold into slavery. For twelve years Solomon Northrup had no choice but to live in fear, at the end of a whip, separated from his wife and children.
12 Years a Slave
I can't imagine having to deal with what Solomon did. To be ripped away from my family, forced into slavery, all because of the color of my skin. It's unthinkable, really. Throughout his trials, Northrup was forced into a life of servitude, treated like less than a human being, and .finally, just when he was ready to give up hope (or perhaps had, really), was finally rescued and reunited with his family.
Slavery is something that many of us may take for granted. The entire time period is something that many of us don't understand, can't comprehend, because things really aren't the same. Sure, there is still a lot of racism in today's world, but it's getting less frequent, really.
This was, to me, a great watch. The fact that it really happened, is based on a true story, made it all the more touching and eye-opening. Definitely give it a watch if you haven't already.
