Several years ago, I had a sinus infection that just wouldn’t quit. I went through two rounds of different kinds of antibiotics, and my GP finally referred me to an ear, nose and throat specialist. This guy, who was very down to earth, suggested that I use the NeilMed system. NeilMed also makes a product called the NetiPot that I think more people are familiar with than the NeilMed bottle system I use. I use the bottle, and it really worked on that sinus infection, and has helped with colds ever since. You have to be careful to that the water you use is distilled or pre-boiled, and also that it’s not too cold or too hot. Using water right out of the tap apparently can expose your sinuses to further infection, and using water that’s too hot or too cold just irritates your sinuses and makes you feel worse. You also have to be very gentle when you squeeze the bottle. Hard-core flushing irritates your sinuses too. But with the right approach, this sinus flushing really helps a lot!
I have a surfer friend who swears by an ocean water nasal flush when he’s getting a cold. I guess this is sort of the same thing, but far more comfortable, I’m sure, and less dangerous!
