Pros: inexpensive, works for kids or adults
Cons: you have to get used to the scent

Vick's VapoRub has been a regular item in my house since I was a little girl. Not only does it help clearing mucous during a cold or sinus problem, but it also makes sore muscles feel better. The active ingredients in the VapoRub are Eucalyptus Oil, menthol and camphor. They create fumes that, when breathed in, clear up any congestion in the chest and head. This is really useful with small children and with diabetics who might not be able to take internal medications for congestion. You just spread the ointment on the chest and neck and inhale the fumes. The vapoRub also produces a warm feeling on the skin. The ingredients do stop coughing as well as clear up the sinuses. There should be no side effects, like drowsiness or jitteryness, and it is perfectly safe to use for children and adults.

I have had allergies that causes my sinuses to fill up at night since I was a little girl. My mom put VapoRub on my chest every night so that I could sleep mucous free. It was a regular part of our routine at night, plus reassuring that the bed bugs wouldn't bite. I used Vick's on my children, who also have allergies like I did, and will probably use it on my grandchildren.

Since it's definitely cold and flu season (and I've, of course, gotten a cold already), I went out and bought some Vicks. It's pricy for the size--I picked up a 1.76 ounce container--but you definitely get what you pay for with stuff like this. Knock-off versions just aren't the same! Read more

I love this stuff. I use it anytime I have a congested or stuff nose or I am feeling under the weather. I use it a ton more if I get sick. I normally rub it on my chest and sometimes on my temples, which usually always helps my nose open up so that I can breathe better. Read more
